Artists, sculptors, and architects of that time often used repetitions of bends characteristic of seashells, which, in turn, were in great demand in the design of fashionable grotto pavilions in palace parks. Thanks to them, the style received the name “rocaille” (from the French “rocaille”, which means shell), which later transformed into the familiar name of “rococo”. Rococo had more of an impact upon British artists such as William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough, and the Swiss Angelica Kauffman.
