Remember to create rounded shapes as much as possible for the best look. Circular or keyhole-shaped flagstone walkways leave plenty of room for a lush garden, like Finding Lovely's in the backyard above. Use a small tree as your focal point and add medium- to small-sized plants surrounding it.

Stone Paver Walkway

But here’s how you can build your own stone stairway using flat flagstones for the treads and solid blocks of stone, called wallstone, for the risers. Brick – Brick is great for outdoor walkways because it offers a distinct look that is attractive and elegant. However, brick is best when used in mild climates and will need to be sealed every few years to help prevent any water penetration. Pavers can really dress up a garden and are an excellent choice for more formal areas. Though pricey relative to other materials, pavers require less maintenance and upkeep than many other options that cost less.

walkway design

Concrete Pavers look similar to clay bricks but are cheaper and easier to replace. They are ideal for curved walkways and exquisite designs because they are easy to curve and cut. The walkway adds enormously to the curb appeal of your home, so you should use materials that blend well with the exterior of your home. You can use materials such as concrete, bricks, stone, pavers, or Gravel. A natural and flowing walkway (stepping stones, pallet wood, or mulch over the grass) will work well with a home with a rustic design. Stamped concrete transforms a regular slap of concrete to make it resemble pavers or natural stone.

walkway design

Much like investing in brick for your home’s exterior, a brick walkway adds value to your property. Brick pavers are extremely durable and low-maintenance, but they can be expensive. Your choice of outdoor walkway design is yet another place to honor your signature style. A beautiful front path can significantly increase your home’s curb appeal. When it’s time to sell, your small investment of time and money could reap big rewards.

Take some tips from TOH landscaper Roger Cook in our stepping stone path step-by-step guide. No walkway idea is complete without landscaping to accent its borders. A front yard or garden path can be its own work of art trailing through a simple grass lawn. However, most walkway ideas look best when embellished with plants that complement the decor. If you are into green construction, look into recycled wood planks.

Rush to put pavers down on a faulty base, and it might take only a few seasons for the stones to shift and become a tripping hazard. Larger pavers dramatically mark the end of the path, leading to a pergola and restful chair. A cascading collection of yellow, deep pink, and purple flowers softens the walkway and plays with the muted brick color. Take a leisurely stroll down a path that ends with a quiet nook for reading and relaxing.

Bring in Brick

Picture a series of these geometric platforms, playfully punctuating a garden landscape or gracefully leading up a hillside. Dive into the mesmerizing domain of wooden walkway ideas, where the curved wooden walkway gracefully serenades its way through the landscape. Imagine a pathway that doesn’t just guide but also glides, curving and winding, echoing the natural ebbs and flows of the terrain it traverses. Journey into the heart of nature with wooden walkway ideas that evoke the untouched beauty of the forest. Envision log plank steps, carved from robust logs, placed meticulously to create a path that seems to have sprouted from the very earth itself. From classic straight planks to intricate herringbone patterns, the design possibilities are boundless.

Wood is also a lovely way to enliven a garden path, with its warm neutrality contrasting against brilliant green foliage. Granite, slate, limestone, quartzite, and travertine are some of the natural stone pavers available today. While they are more expensive than concrete pavers, they lend an elegance that concrete simply cannot duplicate. While a straight pathway might be the best walkway idea for your home, a curved walkway is infinitely more interesting. In some ways, curved walkway ideas may be easier to execute because of their organic edges. However, to successfully lay a curved concrete or brick walkway, you must possess expert DIY skills.

And because they’re modular, they’re easy to install and fix, even for DIYers. Instead of wearing a path into the grass, connect spaces purposefully with a stone walkway. Watch TOH landscaper Roger Cook work with a homeowner to make a flagstone walkway in a day’s time. A DIY pathway made of stone pavers is a great way to save your lawn from being trampled and compacted by foot traffic. And it certainly is an easy, one-day project for most weekend warriors. The hardest parts of the process are the labor of mixing the wet stone dust that serves as the pavers’ base and then lifting and moving the stones.

Rococo Definition, Art, Painting, & Characteristics

rococo interior design

Artists, sculptors, and architects of that time often used repetitions of bends characteristic of seashells, which, in turn, were in great demand in the design of fashionable grotto pavilions in palace parks. Thanks to them, the style received the name “rocaille” (from the French “rocaille”, which means shell), which later transformed into the familiar name of “rococo”. Rococo had more of an impact upon British artists such as William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough, and the Swiss Angelica Kauffman. In his The Analysis of Beauty (1753) Hogarth advocated for the use of a serpentine line, seeing it as both more organic and aesthetically ideal.

What is Rococo style?

Matt Blacke is a pseudonym of sorts (get it?) for designer and gallery director Cliff Fong. While his residential work generates press (his Hancock Park project was on our March 2021 cover), an upcoming endeavor—an L.A. The Los Angeles–based Kerry Joyce got his start in art direction on television in the mid-1970s (he even won an Emmy for his work).

Italian Rococo

There is not so much of it as in the grandiose palace halls in the Baroque spirit, but it is still present. At the same time, stucco patterns appear in the form of rosettes, diverge from the center with graceful beams of patterns, and overlap with no less luxurious embossed plinths. England's employment of Rococo, which was called "French style," was more restrained, as the excesses of the style were met with a somber Protestantism. As a result, rocaille introduced by the émigré engraver Hubert-François Gravelot and the silversmith Paul de Lamerie, was only employed as details and occasional motifs.

What Is Rococo Architecture?

It should be obviously “highbrow.” In many cases, the furniture will have carvings and dramatic legs. The Rococo period in Europe is also a period when America's Founding Fathers were born—George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams. The Age of Enlightenment culminated in revolution—both in France and in the new America—when reason and scientific order dominated. "Liberty, equality, and fraternity" was the slogan of the French Revolution, and the Rococo of excess, frivolity, and monarchies was over. A few well-chosen pieces (e.g., sofas with rolled arms and tufted upholstery, reading chairs with cabriole legs, etc.) can add a touch of elegance, sophistication, and beauty to any space.

Furniture

Most importantly, do not forget about the basic principles of Rococo – grace and lightness. An elegant but not massive table with exquisite decor, a comfortable armchair with a sophisticated finish, airy draperies on the windows, and delightful trinkets on glazed shelves – such a home office will delight particularly women. It should be noted that there are not so many massive and dimensional elements here. The rest of the decor is lighter and represented by an abundance of mirrors in which the chandelier lights are effectively reflected, table clocks, luxurious candelabra, paintings, porcelain and bronze figurines and caskets from rosewood. The new movement Neoclassicism, led by the artist Jacques-Louis David, emphasized heroism and moral virtue.

Art Periods – A Detailed Look at the Art History Timeline

Around 1740 the Rococo style began to be employed in British furniture, most notably in the designs of Thomas Chippendale. His catalogue Gentleman's and Cabinet-makers' directory (1754), illustrating Rococo designs, became a popular industry standard. In 1712 Watteau entered the Prix de Rome competition of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, and the Academy admitted him as a full member. His "reception piece" for the Academy, Embarkation for Cythera (1717), effectively launched the Rococo movement. The Academy coined the term Fête galante, or courtship party, to refer to the work, thus establishing the category that was to be a dominant element of Rococo painting.

Recent projects include a beach house in the Hamptons, a Philadelphia Main Line residence, and a Greenwich Village apartment. A national treasure in his native Brazil, Sig Bergamin is a decorator and art collector with clients in the United States, Europe, and South America. A typical Bergamin project is exuberant and full of life, and the designer’s mastery of the mix has a tropical flair and modernist touches. Paris-born Delphine Krakoff of Pamplemousse Design has an innate sense of style and natural French flair, which translates directly into her interiors.

What are the elements of Rococo interior design?

The term rococo originates from the French word rocaille meaning shellwork or rockwork. Centuries ago, people used the term to describe the ornate carvings and ornamental work found in architecture, furniture, and art. As this country is the birthplace of this style, it is here that it appears before enthusiastic connoisseurs in all its graceful and luxurious authenticity. Today it is almost impossible to convey the sophistication and splendor of the “palace chamber style” in the most authentic way.

Differences in style by region or city

Sometimes, real flowers and shells will be added to include some organic elements in the décor. In fact, it’s very common to see dyed flowers in vases around rococo interiors. Decorative moldings, carvings, and plasterwork are used to create intricate patterns and designs. These elements often depict natural forms like shells, flowers, vines, and scrolls. Gesamtkunstwerke is the German word that explains Zimmerman's process.

Shortly after, in 1804 the Branicki Palace was purchased by General Józef Niemojewski. The circular Hall of Mirrors in the heart of the structure takes up most of the ground level; its reflective surfaces reflect the park. In the Bavarian national colors of blue and silver, it creates an ethereal mood. The outside was rather modest in design, but the inside decorations were lavish in art and sculpture, carpets, and mirrors. Throughout the summer months, when over 500 citrus and orange trees filled the baroque garden, the Orangery provided a beautiful setting for courtly celebrations.

The Rococo was a style of interior design that communicated idyllic and unconcerned wealth. While most prominent in interior design, Rococo would also be used in architectural projects such as Catherine's Palace. The Rococo style began to vanish after the 1750s as Neoclassicism became prominent. Nevertheless, Rococo interior design remains influential today as a way to add lavish details to the more restrained aesthetics of modern design.

Her projects include a restoration of a historic Hamptons estate; a family home in Beverly Hills; and a beach house in Bellport, Long Island. In our Winter 2023 issue, ELLE DECOR published principal Christina Seilern’s recently completed vacation home on the Greek isle of Paros. Rome remained possibly the most conservative city in Italy, and noblemen tended to prefer the grandiose majesty of Baroque interiors than the frivolity and grace of its Rococo counterpart. However, there were some elements which made Roman Rococo relatively distinguished, such as the bureau-cabinets made for Pope Pius VI, which were noted for the rich lacquerwork, japanning and its Chinoiserie themed pictures.

This is critical to do before even renting or buying a space (if you’re at this stage, read our earlier post). Perhaps the MEPs are so far gone you will opt for a different venue altogether.

Remember When Pablo Escobar and His Son Visited the White House?

There, Maria would snap a photo of Pablo Escobar at the White House. Read on to learn how Pablo Escobar came to pose in front of the White House — and, around the same time, take his family to Disney World. However, Escobar was vilified by the Colombian and U.S. governments, who routinely stifled his political ambitions and pushed for his arrest, with Escobar widely believed to have orchestrated the DAS Building and Avianca Flight 203 bombings in retaliation.

Andrei Chikatilo: The Rostov Ripper Who Confessed to 56 Murders

Escobar was shot and killed by authorities eight months later in Medellín. Escobar’s weakness, Bowden says, was that he believed his own propaganda about being a populist hero who provided Medellin’s poor with housing and soccer fields. He could easily have left the country after his surrender in 1991 but instead stayed and fought, like Macbeth, adding another chapter to Colombia’s century-long history of La Violencia. If his story has heroes, however flawed, they are Colombians such as Col. Hugo Martinez, head of the special police unit that pursued Escobar, who could be neither bought nor scared and who kept going when the situation seemed hopeless. The Americans were technically adept but prone to interagency squabbling, tolerant of human-rights abuses and contemptuous of the host country. Investigators didn’t believe this story and Marroquín’s mother spent two years in prison on money-laundering charges.

Five Dead After Private Jet Crashes In Virginia

So many in the crowd were walking novels—or walking prestige-television series, if you prefer. I met a former TV news reporter who found out she was pregnant and started writing letters to Escobar while she was staking out La Catedral, the luxe prison he had built for himself. He had killed her uncle and her grandfather, and she asked him how he spoke to his children about the horror he inflicted on the children of his victims.

Who Was Pablo Escobar’s Wife?

A rare photo of one of history’s wealthiest drug lords posing in front of the White House. Seal surrendered to federal authorities at the end of April 1983 and attempted to make a deal, first with the Florida task force, then with the Baton Rouge task force. Both rejected any deals, even though Seal told them a little about his involvement with the Ochoa family. [18] Without a deal, Seal was tried in February 1984 and after a month-long trial was convicted on all the counts in the first indictment. Adler Berriman "Barry" Seal (July 16, 1939 – February 19, 1986) was an American commercial airline pilot who became a major drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel.

Hippos

There are many facts about Pablo Escobar that confirm his mythological status. At the height of his power, Escobar was making $40 million a week. And he once burned a barrel of 2 million dollars just to keep his daughter warm. Escobar had been killed on the roofs of Medellin, exactly twelve years after the photo was taken.

Early life

Besides those surrendering Wednesday, 10 other major drug dealers have turned themselves in, and 10 more have announced plans to do so. Since becoming mayor, in 2016, Federico Gutiérrez has waged a campaign to reject what he calls “the past”—the legacy of narcotrafficking and violence. At the peak of Escobar’s rampage, Medellín was the murder capital of the world, with more than six thousand homicides in 1991.

Futaba Cake Building

Then I found out the guides were telling their tourists that it was where Pablo burned people! For example, he talks about the asado de los Moncada”—the Moncada barbecue. When Escobar’s men burned the bodies of Moncada and Galeano, they arranged to have a barbecue the same evening, to disguise the smoke and the smell. At the same time, he traveled with his family on a first-class vacation to Disneyland.

The Escobar family trip to the United States from Colombia reportedly also included a visit to Disneyworld. A multibillionaire with a private army, Escobar gave Colombian authorities the option of plata o plomo-- a bribe or a bullet. His sicarios, or paid assassins, killed presidential candidates, in one case by blowing an Avianca jetliner out of the sky with 110 people aboard. They killed judges, prosecutors and hundreds of police officers.

Escobar’s son says he’s not interested in restoring his father’s reputation, and instead just wants people to stick to the facts as he knows them. He terrorized an entire country,” says Escobar’s oldest son, who now goes by the name of Sebastián Marroquín. “It’s full of errors.” That’s the verdict of Juan Pablo Escobar when asked about the hit Netflix show Narcos, which recounts the story of his father, the notorious 1980s Colombian drug trafficker Pablo Escobar. “This symbol, which is a symbol of illegality, of evil, will be brought to the ground,” said Federico Gutiérrez. The mayor vowed to topple the building by next year and to put a park remembering victims in its place. But the system came under attack on civil rights grounds in the assembly, which left its survival in doubt.

He built hospitals and housing for the poor and was elected to the Colombian parliament in 1982. As such, he has a somewhat complicated legacy in the country today as both a violent drug lord and a philanthropist. In the 1982 Colombian parliamentary election, Escobar was elected as an alternate member of the Chamber of Representatives as part of the Liberal Party. Through this, he was responsible for community projects such as the construction of houses and football fields, which gained him popularity among the locals of the towns that he frequented. However, Escobar's political ambitions were thwarted by the Colombian and U.S. governments, who routinely pushed for his arrest, with Escobar widely believed to have orchestrated the Avianca Flight 203 and DAS Building bombings in retaliation.

Father Elkin said that Popeye—“a very good friend of mine”—came frequently to La Catedral, bringing tourists and a crew of bodyguards. “The guides tell the tourists anything that comes into their heads. For instance, I made an outdoor oven to incinerate the diapers of the old folks.

There, determined to make it rich, he gravitated toward crime at a young age. Escobar allegedly falsified diplomas, took tombstones from graveyards to resell, and stole cars. At the time of the photo, Escobar was striving to cultivate the appearance of a legitimate politician. The following year he was briefly elected as an alternate member of the Columbian Congress. But his political ambitions were short-lived, with the source of his enormous wealth proving impossible to hide.

When your bedroom has a lot of beige, like this round mirror, beige patterned accent wall, light nightstands, and beige bed linens, add a few super-dark pieces. When your bedroom has heavy use of beige, from the walls to the bedding and rugs, we’re crazy over the use of an accent wall in a dark navy blue.

For best results be sure to play with patterns in different scales as done in this space by Penny Morrison, and don't be afraid to mix different styles and eras. Here a large-scale medieval-inspired Begum wallpaper and hot reddish-pink lampshades, throws and cushions are tempered by the more delicate fabric of Ashok in duck egg, a repeat block-printed linen. This fitted bedroom storage idea was designed in collaboration with Sebastian Cox and House of Grey and features doors made from a whitened English oak frame, woven with English ash. Beige is a color that should not be dismissed when you want to be stylish and sophisticated at the same time. It is a color that you can carry through your home and nothing will clash especially when you anchor the bedroom to the rest of the interior.

Embrace natural materials

Brown is a warm and versatile color that goes exceptionally well with beige in a bedroom to provide a comforting ambiance. Beige walls and brown furniture can be paired with orange pillows and comforters if you want to use orange as a secondary color. Keeping plants in your bedroom brings many benefits, from promoting good vibes (feng shui is crucial for your space!) to add that much-needed splash of gorgeous green into your room. We adore this collection of bouclé pillows, heavily desired for the material’s knotted, curly texture in a vintage 1940s style. You can choose ivory, teal, ochre, and neutral colors in various sizes and shapes for extra dimension and depth.

The reason is simple – beige decor is calm, soothing, and has a timeless appeal. It can work with different schemes, from casual to sophisticated and you can add as much or as little of it as you want for pleasing results. And of course the real joy of a neutral bedroom like beige is its ability to work with any color. Add depth with a dark brown or even black or throw in a dash of vibrant green or red for some boldness.

If you're looking to keep the space calm then you can't go wrong with a cream, off-white or light blue. Choosing colorful curtains is a great way to bring personality to a beige bedroom, and luckily, as beige is a neutral color, the options are pretty much endless. Being warm and neutral, beige and stone shades pair well with earthy colors like rich terracotta, orange and red.

Light brown wood cabinets with multiple drawers are a great addition to a beige bedroom. Using pink in furnishings and décor can help brighten the beige tones, and dull gray could also be included as a part of the color scheme to be used as a minor accent shade. For those who want to make this shade the focal point, orange accent walls are a great way to highlight the color while using beige to balance the space. It is a perfect color for bedroom interiors because it strikes the right balance between comfort, quiet, and neutrality. The pale non-color neutrality of a beige bedroom is the perfect base for mixing an eclectic combo of materials and styles, as this modern suite demonstrates.

It is both soothing and relaxing and a warm and welcoming color and a sophisticated color that looks great on its own and blends fantastically with many other colors too. Read on and see a myriad of beige bedroom ideas that will create a magnificent bedroom. Decades ago beige bedrooms were the top color scheme and interior decorators had a ball designing with beige bedroom décor.

Starting with the velvet upholstered curved bed, the bedding is impeccably made and the large lumbar pillow adds a pop of color. I imagine curling up in here eating a chocolate croissant in the armchair and staring out onto the Paris streets. The curved light wood nightstands and matching glass lamps are beautifully paired with the design. I especially love how the drapes match the wall paint, just creates a soothing vibe. You could go for the opposite and chose soft light blue and beige bedroom, cream color bedroom walls with colorful bedding, soft grey and beige bedroom ideas or even a white and beige bedroom.

I love all the details like the bed with attached book-shelving, the small sheepskin covered chair and plush area rug. Floor to ceiling drapes makes the ceiling feel even taller and the light streaming through the window makes it airy and light. The simple, crisp bedding is inviting and the touch of flowers behind the bed adds to the cozy design. Be sure to scroll through our hand picked photos so you can read all the specifics of each design.

The ring chandelier is a showpiece and the red lip art really makes the room go pop. The armchairs and plush ottoman are inviting and the custom drapes add a sophisticated layer to the room. You’ll notice the unique ceramic women statues flanking both sides of bed along with the modern ceramic lamps. The fabric bed wall creates a cocoon-like setting for the modern velvet bed and nightstands.

I was just as thrilled (and surprised) when, during the ceremony, I was awarded a medal of courage from Gutiérrez as part of a group of Valientes who stood up for the city during its long ordeal. After touring the Playboy Mansion-esque Hacienda Nápoles, the extravagant estate of Pablo Escobar, see how the infamous drug kingpin finally met his end in this look at Pablo Escobar’s death. Then, read the story of the female Pablo Escobar, the “Cocaine Godmother” Griselda Blanco.

Who Was Pablo Escobar’s Mother?

The mayor of Medellín is sick and tired of the world’s fascination with Pablo Escobar. Today, Napoles is a theme park, and descendants of Escobar’s hippos roam the towns and rivers nearby. Fueling all this curiosity is a relentless stream of narco television series, on Netflix, Nat Geo, Discovery, and other networks, that narrate Medellín’s history from the perspective of the perpetrators, not the victims. The 2010 HBO documentary Sins of My Father and The 2015 Netflix series Narcos both rekindled public interest in Pablo Escobar, former head of the Colombian drug cartel. The latter also gave us a now-infamous photograph of “the king of cocaine” and his son, Sebastián Marroquín (born Juan Pablo Escobar), brazenly posing in front of the White House in 1981.

Pablo Escobar, a notorious Colombian drug lord, appeared in the famous photo posing in front of the White House in Washington, DC. ” But some members of Escobar’s family, including his son, Juan Pablo, insist that Escobar killed himself. Pablo Escobar’s Medellín Cartel brought in an estimated $70 million a day in the 1980s.

In the 80s, more than 600 police officers were murdered after Esobar offered a bounty of over 2 million pesos for each one. On December 2, 1993, police traced a phone call between Escobar and his son, Juan Pablo, to a safe house in the Los Pinos neighborhood of Medellín. Escobar was killed at the house, felled by three bullets as he stood on its red tiled roof. He was bearded and barefoot, in jeans; a photograph circulated of him lying face down, his belly spilling out of a blue polo shirt. The Colombian artist Fernando Botero, noted for his fleshy, whimsical portrayals of people and animals, reimagined the scene in a heroic oil painting. “The Death of Pablo Escobar” shows him standing on the rooftop with gun in hand, while bullets whiz around him, like insects pestering a giant.

Army intelligence, the CIA, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Juan Pablo claims that his father’s official autopsy was falsified to make the Colombian authorities look like heroes. He insists that, once his father was cornered, he died by suicide before he could be killed.

Did Pablo Escobar Go To Prison?

Resting atop the blue and white arch that welcomed guests to the estate, the plane served as a reminder — to all who passed under it — that Colombia was under the control of the cocaine king. While Hacienda Nápoles wasn’t Pablo Escobar’s only house, it was clearly his favorite. And since he was bringing in millions of dollars each day, he had plenty of cash to ensure that the property was outfitted with every single amenity he could ever dream of.

During his life, Escobar lived by the mantra of “plata o plomo,” which roughly translates to “silver or lead (bullets),” and describes how he used both violence and bribery to get his way. He and his cartel killed police, politicians, journalists, and ordinary citizens who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In 1989, the cartel was even accused of planting a bomb on a domestic passenger flight, killing over 100 people on the airplane. That explosion had been planted by revolutionary guerrillas, but Escobar claimed credit for the bombing. For decades, the violence was inescapable, as narcos, guerrillas, right-wing paramilitaries, and assorted opportunists clawed at the illicit billions pouring out of the drug trade.

He didn’t have time, he said, to andar con maricadas—to mess around with fairy shit. It’s claimed that Escobar’s Medellin cartel supplied 80% of the cocaine in the entire world during the peak of his rule. Escobar unquestionably earned his place on every ranking of the “wealthiest drug lords of all time”. The second was the “Perseguidos por Pablos Escobar,” which translates to “People Persecuted by Pablo Escobar.” Nicknamed Los Pepes, this group was composed of Escobar’s enemies, including other drug traffickers. One member, Rodolfo Berna, was allegedly credited with firing the shot that killed the drug kingpin, though this account has never been confirmed.

So Escobar, his wife, and two children were able to enter the United States without much difficulty in 1981. Escobar may have used a diplomatic passport — or possibly even a fake passport — in order to get into the country with his family. That said, the United States didn’t view him as a great threat at the time. The War on Drugs was unofficially launched in the 1970s under President Richard Nixon, but not expanded until President Ronald Reagan took office in 1981.

He’d needed to win over the Medellín police, who had wanted to refurbish it as an intelligence headquarters. When he got it, he said, he would invite me to watch the demolition. Escobar spent seven years as a fugitive, but his concern was less the Colombian justice system than the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. In 1986, his men murdered Cano, and they machine-gunned his old political enemy Luis Carlos Galán at a Presidential-campaign appearance in 1989.

It was also built for practicality, however, featuring double-layered walls used for hiding mountains of cash and cocaine. Mr. Escobar lived for years in the Monaco Building, a white, six-story edifice with a penthouse apartment on top and his family name still inscribed in fading letters on the exterior. The judges, whose identities are secret, go to work in armor-plated cars and preside over courtrooms equipped with video cameras, one-way glass and voice-distorting microphones. Under Colombian law, Escobar could be sentenced to a total of no more than 30 years for his crimes, and that time could be cut to 15 years if he complies with the government’s conditions.

I was reminded of a YouTube video of Popeye paying homage to Escobar after he got out of prison. He knelt in front of the tomb, his eyes closed, like a choirboy about to receive the Sacrament. In December, 2016, he appeared in a video wielding a semi-automatic pistol and telling his followers, “Hello, warriors. It’s a doll, a beauty.” Popeye complained that Medellín’s mayor had made a fuss, despite the fact that it was a stunt gun. Popeye stood and retrieved the gun, and, holding it by the barrel, he handed it to me.

Incredibly, the Colombian government agreed to Escobar’s proposal. On the day that they banned extraditing criminals in the new Colombian constitution, Escobar surrendered. And he went to a prison that he’d designed himself near Medellín, which was dubbed La Catedral.

Here, he showed off his massive collection of classic cars and bikes, and even built a racetrack for his go-karts. Unlike other famous theme parks, Hacienda Nápoles has quite a seedy history. After all, it was once the location of a Playboy Mansion-like cocaine palace — owned by the notorious Pablo Escobar. Today, Hacienda Nápoles is a family-friendly theme park with water attractions, a wildlife sanctuary, and museums.

The Oficina de Envigado—the closest successor to the Medellín cartel—was run, until recently, by Juan Carlos Mesa, alias Tom, a shadowy figure who almost never appeared in public. Colombian special forces pursued him for years, without success. Then, in early December, police raided Tom’s fiftieth-birthday celebration. (They were tipped off to the party by informants, who noticed unusually generous purchases of twenty-one-year-old Chivas.) There were some fifteen guests at the party, and, to the authorities’ surprise, Popeye was among them.

Cozumel Mexico Cruise Port Guide: Review 2023

map of cozumel cruise port

If you want to check out mainland Mexico, Playa Del Carmen is only a short boat ride away from the island. It is located south of Cancún and north of Tulum, in the state of Quintana Roo. Playa del Carmen is known for its white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and lively nightlife. Punta Langosta, the International Pier (SSA) and Puerta Maya are the three cruise ship piers. The downtown Ferry Pier is used for passenger ferries to Playa del Carmen and sometimes for cruise ship tenders. The government of Cozumel made it easy for tourists when they came up with standard taxi rates from ports to popular destinations on the island.

Discover San Miguel

You simply “wear” a sort of “sub suit” that allows you to go 20 feet below the water and have unobstructed views of the marine life. And with Cozumel’s reputation for great reefs and pristine coral, this is a great thing to do while cruising to this beautiful island. Many cruisers love to take the 45-minute ferry from Cozumel to Play Del Carmen to check out some great resorts and beaches.

This could be one of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise. Especially if you want to get away from the hub-bub of downtown and usually thousands of cruise passengers. Pescaderia is considered a hidden gem a bit outside of Centro San Miguel. This restaurant features fresh seafood dishes, including their famous ceviche, which is a must-try! Or try the local catch, prepared whole and served family-style.

Royal Caribbean, Western Caribbean from Tampa, February 8, 2025

The port of Cozumel ranks among the largest and most visited ports in the Caribbean. A great way to ensure the preservation of the reef is to take only pictures and memories and leave only bubbles. All these beaches are perfect to enjoy the clear waters, the tropical weather and nature and to relax under the sun.

There are no large beach clubs in the downtown area, but that doesn’t mean cruise passengers can’t find a nice place to take a quick dip near Punta Langosta. And you don’t need a snorkeling excursion to experience some of Cozumel’s best-known water activities. In front of the terminal, you’ll spot a spacious area featuring a large Margaritaville, usually filled with cheerful people dancing salsa, drinking tequila, or eating delicious Mexican food. There are plenty of tour booths, shops, several bars, and restaurants (Bar Mandy, Senor Frog’s, Bubba Gump Shrimp…) in this area.

The cost is $80 per person, and the tours typically start at 11am, perfect for cruise passengers. If you want truly spectacular Mayan ruins you can still see them during your cruise to Cozumel, but since they are on the main land of Mexico it will be an all-day event which will require a ferry ride. Chichen Itza (recently named one of the 7 wonders of the world) and Tulum are the main Mayan sites you can see. I recommend grabbing a local taxi right at the cruise port to make sure you’re getting the real deal. From the pristine coral reefs and endless beaches to the plentiful shopping in town, Cozumel has something for everyone. Oh, and there is even something for the Indiana Jones in you if you want to explore some archeological sites.

This beach has a smooth, rock-free shore with clear, turquoise waters and soft, powdery white sand. It’s a good idea to bring your own beach gear, as there is a fee for renting beach chairs and umbrellas. The club also includes a swimming pool and provides a variety of activities for children, including water inflatables and slides, as well as activities for adults, like paddleboarding and kayaking. You can indulge in various enjoyable activities at Mr. Sanchos Beach Club, such as a floating water park, jet skiing, wave running (similar to a jet ski), and ATV riding. Passion Island also has activities for children, including a play area, a maze, and sports like volleyball and soccer.

Cozumel tourist attractions

First up, when it comes to Cozumel docking tips, it’s essential to know which of the three Cozumel cruise terminals you’ll be arriving at so you can make the most of your time on the island. If you’re just looking for walking distance places to have lunch or grab a drink along the waterfront, check out this related post specifically on where to eat near each cruise terminal. Hotels With Day PassesWant to just enjoy the amenities of resorts on Cozumel — such as a private pool, a beach only to hotel guests, showers, meals, and drinks? A number of hotels and resorts on the island (including some right near the cruise ship) offer day passes.

It is strictly a cruise port and not a public port, so enjoy your day at the port without feeling hassled. Your tour of the town will most likely start at the waterfront Malecon, which was built with tourists in mind. It’s a beautiful area surrounded by more shops and eating areas. With its only fault being that it tends to get crowded especially when many cruise ships are docked at the island.

In this section, we will cover the best beaches near the Cozumel cruise port, the top landmarks to explore and the best restaurants and bars to try. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Cozumel has something for everyone on a cruise stop. Read on to discover the best places to visit and activities to do in Cozumel. Puerta Maya Terminal is the largest of the three terminals and has two piers. It is located about 3 miles south of San Miguel and is typically used by Carnival Corporation cruise ships, including Carnival, Princess, P&O, and Costa.

This is Cozumel's oldest pier, located at ~5 min taxi ride from San Miguel. After disembarkation, passengers walk through a shopping plaza with various shops, restaurants, bars. This cruise terminal is located a 5-minute walking distance from the International Cruise Terminal and a 10-minute drive from San Miguel de Cozumel. Puerta Maya is the largest of all terminals and Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock here (Carnival, Princess, Costa…). This terminal is located within walking distance of San Miguel downtown and its main attractions, shops, bars, and restaurants. The cruise lines such as Disney, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Silversea, Marella Cruises, and several others normally dock here (this can change, though, so always check beforehand).

Norwegian Western Caribbean Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Norwegian Cruises to Western Caribbean

norwegian cruise line caribbean

When it comes to cruising, two of the biggest players are Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. If you are planning to set sail, the odds are high you’ll be at least looking at one of these lines. Are you happy to hear that Norwegian Cruise Line debuts new Caribbean cruises from New Orleans and Port Canaveral? Deciding where to go and what kinds of activities you enjoy will help you choose the best cruise line for your situation. Royal Caribbean has more ships and can carry far more passengers, but its destinations are limited compared with Norwegian. Here’s what you need to know about Royal Caribbean, from ship and room size to the activities you can expect on board.

Add your hue when you cruise to the Caribbean with Norwegian Cruise Line. Remember, this is only a taste of the experiences waiting for you on a Norwegian Cruise Line Caribbean cruise vacation. The two ships join 10 other Norwegian Cruise Line ships that will sail the Caribbean during at least part of the fall 2024 and winter 2025 seasons. These include Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Pearl, and Norwegian Escape, all sailing from Miami.

Norwegian Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean: Pool Deck Fun

In short, these are the Norwegian ships to book when you want to take things up a notch. The entryway to each of these ships, for instance, deposits you at the three-story-high Penrose Atrium, which may be the most beautiful atrium of any big ship at sea. It has a curvy, sculptural feel as if the entire space were an art piece. Outside of The Haven, other areas on these ships have a more elegant feel of the sort you find in the fleets of Norwegian's higher-end sister brands, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — albeit on a bigger scale. We've seen these private The Haven suite areas on Norwegian ships before but never on this scale.

We’ve just noticed that there are a lot more high-status cards being shown on Royal Caribbean ships (most often being on a lanyard). Absorb local culture, discover the rich history of European colonialism and explore the pastel vistas of Dutch architecture while watching a game of cricket on a cruise to The Caribbean. Cruise to the Southern Caribbean and venture deep into exotic island activities.

Not all dining venues are free, however, and many require reservations in advance. The cabins measure just 100 square feet but are superbly designed to maximize storage space. Unveiled in 2022 and 2023, respectively, the 3,195-passenger vessels are the first entrants in a new class of Norwegian ships that the line has designed to be more upscale than its earlier vessels. Still, Norwegian Prima isn't necessarily the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you. Whether you'll have a better time on one of the other 18 vessels in the Norwegian fleet will depend a lot on the type of traveler you are. Over the years, I've sailed on all but three of Norwegian's 19 vessels, and my personal favorite is Norwegian Prima. I love its stylish design and upscale feel, as well as its wide mix of eateries, bars and entertainment. With demand for warm-weather destinations, NCL is debuting new 7-day Caribbean cruises from the Big Easy and Port Canaveral for this fall.

They still offer plenty to do (ziplining, pool, watersports) and enjoy, but it’s not quite the massive scale you’ll find at CocoCay. You’d think that when you’re at sea, it’s a way to have lots of outside time and connect with the ocean. Truth is that most ships offer pool decks, but seemingly not much more outdoor space. This is a high-end “resort within a resort” that features a small number of higher-end cabins along with numerous private amenities like pools, lounges, a bar, and restaurant. We’ve broken down the differences between these two cruise lines, including what you can expect on board and who might enjoy these types of cruises. We already mentioned that Norwegian has done away with the traditional dining setups you’ll see on other cruise lines.

Thanks to “freestyle” dining, you can eat at any onboard restaurant at any time during open hours. However, reservations may be required and fill up fast for the most popular restaurants. Both Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean offer plenty of U.S. homeport cruising, along with international itineraries departing from the U.K., Europe and more.

You won’t get the option for a virtual balcony on every ship, so in general expect to choose between suites, balcony rooms, inside rooms and ocean-view rooms when cruising with Royal Caribbean. Of course, there are also options to sail on smaller ships, such as the Grandeur of the Seas, which caps out at 1,992 guests. Whether it’s your first time cruising or you’re a veteran at this type of travel, it can be difficult to decide which cruise line is the best fit for you. View our photo gallery of Caribbean cruising photos from Norwegian Cruise Line. The bright blue of the water and the deep green of the jungle make the Caribbean a colorful place to be.

March Update: Where in the World Are the Norwegian Cruise Line Ships?.

The Eastern Caribbean Islands consist of The U.S. Virgin Islands, The British Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, and Puerto Rico. Some of the cities you may visit during your travels are San Juan, Puerto Rico which was founded in 1521 and is the second oldest city in the Americas. Another stop is St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, which has one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. You may also visit Tortola, British Virgin Islands discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493.

Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Epic’s Caribbean sailings will be available on  in February. Further, these sailings can be booked with NCL’s value-added program, Free at Sea. This provides guests with complimentary amenities including unlimited open bar; free Wi-Fi; specialty dining and shore excursion credits; and free airfare for the second guest on select cruises. Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet consists of 19 ships that come in a wide range of sizes and feature differing mixes of venues and activities. Some are jampacked with fun zones that make them perfect for families, while others are geared toward couples and retirees.

Paradise awaits on Harvest Caye, off the coast of Belize, where you can soar from island to ocean on a 3,000-foot zipline. Whichever beautiful port you choose, there's always a reason to come back to The Caribbean with Norwegian. With 11 convenient departure ports, escaping to paradise has never been easier. Norwegian Cruise Line is adding two more mega-ships to the roster of vessels it will send to the Caribbean from US ports during fall 2024 and into winter of 2025.

However, that can be a very different experience than the fun of sailing on a larger vessel. For instance, if you have children, they would enjoy a big ship with things like go-karts and kids areas compared to a high-end ship focused on adults. Of course, if you are about to cruise — or if you are just planning your next vacation — then you might wonder exactly what the difference is between the two. After all, at first glance they both seem to offer a similar experience with massive ships sailing to exotic ports of call with thousands of passengers.

Firstly, consider booking your cruise during off-peak seasons or taking advantage of special promotions and discounts. However, it’s important to note that there are a few additional costs involved. While the cruise fare for the child is covered, you’ll still need to pay for port taxes, registration costs, insurance, flights, and transfers. These expenses can vary depending on the destination and length of the cruise, so it’s important to factor them into your budget.

The worldwide river cruises venture to Egypt, the Mekong in South East Asia, and Southern Africa. The a la carte dinner menu updates every evening, so something fresh and sumptuous is always in store.

Bring your own snacks, refillable water bottles, and essential items to minimize extra expenses onboard. It’s also worth researching and booking shore excursions independently instead of using the cruise line’s offerings, as they can be more expensive. During the booking process, you’ll be able to select the number of passengers and specify the ages of the children traveling with you.

One great feature for families is Norwegian’s flexible dining philosophy, as you show up when you want. The biggest drawback of any Kids Sail Free offer are the blackout dates, which greatly hinder many families ability to book a cruise that qualifies for the offer. Treat your taste buds to something yummy, as the family-friendly dining atmosphere on a Norwegian Cruise Line has something for everyone. Freestyle Dining allows families to eat where they wish, whether it’s something fast and casual like pizza or posher, like dinner at a sit-down establishment.
